The New Valley’s Al-Kharga city was declared the first environmentally friendly city in Egypt by Minister of Environment Yasmin Fouad on Monday.
The announcement was made at the city at the Minister visit which coincided with the World Environment Day.
Al-Kharga was chosen to be eco-friendly, due its lack of industrial activities, except for small date packaging facilities. The city withdraws its energy from solar power and natural gas. It features a 500 square metre of green areas per capita.
The Minister laid the foundation stone of a solar park worth £E16.25 Million with a production capacity of 1.5 megawatts.
Over the past three years, the Ministry of Environment, in cooperation with the New Valley municipal authority, planted 7,000 trees on Al-Kharga Airport Road extending on 11 kilometres. The initiative plans to produce 30,000 seedlings, which will be planted across the region. Additionally, 5,000 olive trees were allocated to the region and vowed to deliver a second batch in the future.
The municipal authority had introduced a bike lane stretching over 6.3 kilometres at a cost of £E10 Million. The city has been developing its digital and automated services.
Al-Kharga is hosting several environmentally focused projects ranging from fisheries, greenhouses, palm tree farms, agricultural recycling and utilising empty rooftops to plant herbs.
