Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi inaugurated Imam Al-Hussein Mosque after extensive renovations on Wednesday with Sultan of the Indian Bohra community Mufaddal Saifuddin.

Renovation works focused on developing the shrines of ‘Ahl Al-Bayt’, family members of prophet Muhammad, across Egypt. Imam Al-Hussein Mosque is one of the most significant Islamic sites in Egypt, which houses the final resting place of Imam al-Hussein, the grandson of the Prophet.

“I would like to thank the Egyptian president, the government, and the people for their role in renovating the shrine of Imam Al-Hussein”, the Sultan said.

Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly and Minister of Religious Endowments Mohamed Mokhtar Gomaa were in attendance, along with Saifuddin’s brothers and sons; Prince Jawhar Izz al-Din, Prince Jaafar Al-Sadiq Saif al-Din and the Sultan’s representative in Egypt Sayyid Mufaddal Mohammad.

“In valuaton of the historic relations between Egypt and the Bohra community, Saifuddin exhauted valued efforts in the renovation and restoration of Ahl Al-Bayt shrines and a number of Egyptian historic mosques, including the Al-Hussein, Al-Sayyeda Nafisa, and Al-Sayyeda Zeinab Mosques”, a statement by Presidential spokesman Bassam Rady read.

At the visit, Sisi inspected a chamber within the mosque which contains relics of Prophet Muhammad. The chamber was added to the mosque in 1893 to house a piece of cloth believed to be part of a linen cloak once worn by the prophet and a lantern with four strands of the prophet’s hair. The chamber also contains merwad for kohl (an eyeliner) belonging to the prophet and a sword which was presented to him by one of his companions. Additionally, the room houses a copy of the Quran written by Imam Ali ibn Abi Talib, who was the Fourth Caliph of Islam and father of Imam Al-Hussein.
