On Friday, Egyptian Minister of International Cooperation Rania al-Mashat and Director General of the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development (KFAED) Marwan Abdullah al-Ghanem agreed to study the feasibility a railway connection between Egypt and Sudan. Al-Mashat signed the agreement held in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia at the joint annual meetings of Arab Financial Institutions, which are currently being.
“The deal, worth 750,000 Kuwaiti dinars ($2.5 Million), covers technical, economic and environmental feasibility study for the construction of a 570 km railway system linking Egypt and Sudan”, the Ministry of International Cooperation said in a statement.
“The fund is a Kuwaiti public institution which relies entirely on its own resources for the provision of loans and other kinds of development assistance”, the KFAED website published.
The KFAED has contributed $3.6 Billion to 54 development projects in Egypt since 1980. It offered 14 technical grants worth $48.6 Billion.
The Egyptian Ministry of Transportation had announced in February that the preliminary studies of Egypt-Sudan railway lines have been completed.
The new railway line between the two countries was first proposed in 2010. The idea was revisited in 2018, as a platform for the export of Egyptian products to Sudan and the rest of the African continent.
