Egypt and EU co-chair the Global Counterterrorism Forum

Noha al-Tawil – Egypt Today

The Coordination Committee of the Global Counterterrorism Forum (GCTF) selected Egypt and the European Union (EU) to co-chair the organisation on Thursday.

The EU will assume office in September 2022 until September 2024. Whereas the Egyptian chairmanship begins from March 2023 until March 2025.

“The new decision is a confirmation of the members’ appreciation for the leading role Egypt plays in countering regional and international terrorism”, according to the Egyptian Foreign Ministry.

“Egypt intends to capitalise on its experience in counterterrorism to implement the forum’s 2021-2031 strategic vision document”, the Ministry added.

Egypt aims to focus on and the needs of African and other developing countries and seeks to enhance existing coordination between the GCTF and the regional counterterrorism mechanisms.

The GCTF is a multilateral mechanism platform for counterterrorism which was founded in 2011 to facilitate official exchange of experience and knowledge of relevant best practices. It operates in coordination with the United Nations’ counterterrorism agencies, regional, and international organisations.
