Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi stressed in a phone call with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin on Wednesday the need to prioritise dialogue to settle the Ukraine crisis.

“Egypt is ready to support the diplomatic endeavours to facilitate a political settlement to end the conflict and preserve international security and stability. Egypt is closely following developments in Ukraine, and places high priority on the safety and security of Egyptian citizens in the country”, Sisi stressed.

During the call he expressed his appreciation for the measures taken by Russia to facilitate the exit of Egyptian citizens. They also discussed enhancing strategic cooperation frameworks through existing joint development projects.

Russia and Ukraine have agreed to a new daylong ceasefire on Wednesday to allow civilians to escape the fighting. “Some progress has been achieved after three rounds of negotiations with Kyiv”, Russia announced earlier on Wednesday.

Prior to the conflict, the number of Egyptians in Ukraine stood at around 6,000, which includes 3,000 undergraduate students. So far hundreds of Egyptian expats have crossed the Ukrainian borders to Romania, Austria, Hungary, Slovakia, and Poland, where the Egyptian embassies prepared temporary residences for them.
