Egyptians in Ukraine urged to stay at home

On Thursday, the Egyptian embassy in Kyiv urged Egyptian nationals living in Ukraine to remain at home and to take measures to ensure their safety.

“Egyptian authorities are in close contact with their Ukrainian counterparts to ensure the safety of Egyptian nationals living in the Ukraine. We urge our expats to follow instructions from the Ukrainian government until further notice”, a statement by the embassy read.

The alert comes following Russia’s invasion of the Ukraine on Thursday. It was issued after the announcement of martial law in Ukraine and the closure of airspace and train lines.

“The embassy will provide the Egyptian community in the Ukraine with any additional instructions through its Facebook page”, the statement added.

“Around 6,000 Egyptians live in the Ukraine, the majority being students”, according to Khaled Mohamed, the Head of the Youth Committee of the Egyptian Community in Ukraine.

Minister of Emigration and Expatriates Affairs Nabila Makram confirmed; “the Ministry is in touch with the Egyptian community in the Ukraine to follow up the situation and support their needs”.

“We have set up an emergency group dedicated to follow up on the condition of the Egyptian community in the Ukraine. The group is in communication with the Egyptian community to keep them appraised of the latest developments”, Makram said.

On Thursday afternoon, the Ukrainian Embassy in Egypt issued a statement urging its citizens who are planning to return from Egypt to “find temporary residence, and to follow further development of events and to register on the electronic system”.

The Ukrainian embassy called its citizens to maintain contact with the relevant embassies and representatives of the Ukraine where they are for further instructions. According to the Ukrainian embassy in Egypt, there are almost 4,000 Ukrainians living, working and studying in Egypt.
