Germany Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock began her first official visit to Egypt on Friday. She is expected to discuss bilateral relations and cooperation in preparation for COP 27 conference which will convene in Sharm El-Sheikh in November 2022.
“She would meet Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry and other members of the Egyptian government”, a statement by the German embassy in Cairo read.
Baerbock will also explore areas of cooperation in connection with the upcoming 27th Conference of the Parties to the UN Convention on Climate Change (COP 27).
“I am pleased with such an early visit by the new Foreign Minister, which signals our keen interest in continuing the high-level dialogue with Egypt on all regional and bilateral matters as well as on worldwide cooperation in climate protection”, German ambassador Frank Hartmann commented.
Baerbock’s visit to Egypt comes amid the ongoing Ukraine-Russia crisis as Europe fears possibly cutting off natural gas supply. Egypt is currently viewed as a possible key supplier of natural gas to Europe.
