The United Nations’ initiative ‘Generation Unlimited’ was launched in Egypt under the name ‘Shabab Balad’, at the World Youth Forum (WYF) held in Sharm El-Sheikh on Tuesday.

The international initiative is the first partnership between the government sector, the private sector and youth. It aims to provide skill training and connect the globe’s all 1.8 billion young people, aged 10-24 years, with employment, entrepreneurship, and positive social impact opportunities.

“The new platform endorsed Egypt’s vision 2030, which targets empowering young people through training and educational opportunities, to provide them with the skills necessary for the labour market. It also encourages them to become entrepreneurs and active participants in society”, Minister of International Cooperation Rania al-Mashat affirmed.

Generation Unlimited was launched at the 73rd session of the United Nations General Assembly in 2018, to bring together world leaders, public, private and youth-led institutions to partner, finance and provide scalable solutions for young people. The initiative adopts the concept of “learning to earning” to align youth capabilities with the needs of the labour market. It takes account of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals of 2030.

“The global initiative has an audacious goal to have every young person in the world learning and training. For every boy and girl in the world to have a chance to go to school, learn, train and have an appropriate job by 2030”, UNICEF Executive Director Henrietta Fore said in a recorded speech at WYF.

In his keynote speech at the launch of the ‘Shabab Balad’ platform, Kevin Frey, CEO of the international initiative, said; “in our first three years, the international platform has reached 220 million young people along with more than 3,000 partners, operating in over 50 countries with opportunities for skill acquisition, employment, entrepreneurship and social impact”.

The UNICEF was chosen as the secretariate within the UN to oversee the international initiative in Egypt. It will coordinate with the office of the United Nations Resident Coordinator in Egypt and all UN offices in the country.
