“164 people have been killed in protests which have rocked the country over the last week”, Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Health said on Sunday.

The figures reported on the state news channel Khabar-24 indicate a significant rise compared to previous tallies. It was not clear whether the deaths refer only to civilians or if law-enforcement deaths were included. Kazakh authorities said earlier Sunday, “16 police or national guard officers had been killed”. Authorities had previously said the civilian death toll reached 26.

“Most of the deaths, 103 were in Almaty, the country’s largest city, where demonstrators seized government buildings and set some afire”, the Ministry’s statement noted. Kazakhstan’s ombudswoman for children’s rights organisation said, “three of those killed were minors, including a 4-year-old girl”.

The Ministry of Health reported treating over 2,200 people for injuries resulting from the protests confrontations. The Interior Ministry said about “1,300 security officers were injured”.

“5,800 people were detained by police during the protests which descended into violence over the week days and prompted a Russia-led military alliance to send troops to the country”, the Kazakhstan’s Presidential office announced in a statement.

On Sunday, the Presidential office said, “order has stabilised in the country. Authorities have regained control of administrative buildings which had been occupied by protesters”.
