Environmental degradation costs Cairo $47B annually, Minister reveals

“The cost of environmental degradation in Greater Cairo alone amounts to US$47 Billion annually”, Minister of Environment, Yasmine Fouad stressed on Sunday.

She noted that the issue stems from waste, vehicles and factory emissions which include the use of fossil fuels. “Linking climate change to the economy is no luxury”, she stressed.

“Egypt emits a total of 0.6% equivalent to 325 million tons and the energy sector, which includes electricity, petroleum and transportation, are the main causes of the emissions, followed by industrial and the waste sectors”, Fouad explained.

The Ministry of Environment warned that climate change is a global threat leading to the melting of ice, which could affect food crops, would lead to a rise in commodity prices impacting ordinary citizens.

“Most international climate conferences are based on political tracks, pointing out that the recommendations of the last climate summit in Glasgow, which recommended tracking emission and setting up a containment work program”, Fouad told TEN TV channel.
