Cairo, Amman discuss land transport links

Egyptian Minister of Transport Kamel al-Wazir and ambassador of Jordan to Cairo Amjad al-Adayleh, discussed reactivating a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between transport companies in Egypt, Iraq and Jordan to serve passengers between the three countries at a standard ticket price of US$130.

They stressed, “the importance of the protocol signed between the three countries to operate a land transport line between their capital, starting from Cairo through Amman to Baghdad and vice versa”.

Tickets, priced $130, includes the ferry ride between the ports of Nuweiba and Aqaba. The two sides emphasized, “this line aims to facilitate movement of passengers, including students, scholars and labour between the three countries”.

Reservations in Egypt will be made through the Arab Union Superjet Company.

They also discussed means to support trade between the two countries and overcoming port delays, facilitating the transportation of Egyptian products to Jordan, and then to Iraq and Syria. The meeting touched on the need to develop an ‘Arab Maritime Bridge’ company owned by the three countries. The new venture will open new markets and promote trade movement between the three partners and East African countries.

The Jordanian ambassador praised “the great developments which Egypt has made in the railway sector”. He expressed his “desire to see mutual cooperation in training students, technicians and engineers at the Egyptian National Railway Authority’s ‘Wardan Training Institute’ in Cairo”.

Al-Wazir explained that “the institute is a large educational training edifice comparable to institutes in developed countries”. He stressed “the Egyptian Railway Authority full preparedness to train Jordanian and Arab students in the field”.
