Britain lifts flight restrictions on Sharm

The British government announced Tuesday (October 22, 2019) that it is lifting restrictions on flights between Sharm El-Sheikh airport and UK airports.

The decision is a result of comprehensive security procedure improvement in at Sharm El-Sheikh airport, and close co-operation between Egypt and the United Kingdom on aviation security.

Commenting on the decision, Grant Shapps, British Secretary of State for Transport said, “we look forward to services to Sharm El-Sheikh resuming, and lifting the restriction is the first step in that process”.

Shapps added “the safety and security of British nationals remains our top priority. This decision follows close co-operation between our aviation security experts and their Egyptian counterparts and improvement in security procedures at the airport”.

The British government will work with air carriers which have expressed an interest in operating flights to and from Sharm El-Sheikh airport.

In 2015, the United Kingdom suspended all flights to the Egyptian resort city of Sharm El-Sheikh, following the tragic bombing incident of the Russian airliner. Sharm El-Sheikh is a popular destination for British as well other countries’ tourists visiting Egypt.
