Egyptian satellite ‘Nilesat 301’ was launched by the SpaceX rocket ‘Falcon 9’ from the US city of Florida on Wednesday.

Last year, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Khaled Abdel Ghaffar, announced that Egypt would launch two satellites in 2022. The last Egyptian satellite launched was ‘Tiba-1’, which was sent to outer space from France in November 2019.

According to the head of the Egyptian Space Agency, Mohamed al-Qosy, the ‘Tiba-1’ satellite was utilised to monitor the Egyptian borders in the effort to combat terrorist infiltrations.

“Small stations are installed on borders, equipped with cameras, radars and sensors. All of which are connected to the satellite”, he explained.

The satellite lies 37 kilometres above the earth and is controlled from Egypt. “Tiba-1 can perform audio call services and will later provide internet services”, al-Qosy added.

The 5.6-tonne satellite made by Airbus and Thales Alenia Space (TAS) will remain in orbit for at least 15 years to provide Egypt with phone and internet services.
