Egyptian Foreign Minister and President-designate of the 27th session of the UN Climate Change Conference (COP27) Sameh Shoukry held a series of meetings at the Bonn UN Climate Conference in Germany on Tuesday and Wednesday.

“The 56th session of subsidiary bodies aims to lay the groundwork for success at COP27”, the UN announced. Government officials in Bonn focused on key areas of mitigation, adaptation and financially supporting developing countries.

“Africa is most affected by the negative repercussions of climate change despite being the smallest contributor to emissions. African countries are facing difficulty in obtaining the needed climate funding to deal with these repercussions”, Shoukry stressed following a meeting with the African Group of Negotiators on Climate Change on Wednesday.

On Tuesday, the he met with the Executive Secretary of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCC) Patricia Espinosa. They discussed contributions of subsidiary bodies (SBI56) to the progress required and expected outcomes of COP27 in Sharm El-Sheikh.

Espinosa highlighted the importance of the SBI56 in enhancing global climate action, especially providing scientific and technological advice, and the effective implementation of climate pledges and the Paris Agreement on climate change.

Shoukry met with the Climate Action Network (CAN), which is the largest group of civil society organisations working in the field of climate change. The CAN covers over 1,300 environmental non-governmental organisations in over 130 countries.
