“India will serve as an alternate source of wheat for Egypt, following the disruption in the country’s wheat supply due to the Russia-Ukraine conflict”, Egyptian Minister of Agriculture Al-Sayed al-Quseir announced on Thursday.
“A delegation from the Ministry of Agriculture visited India this week to conduct technical studies on importing wheat from the South Asian country”, the Ministry added in a statement.
The delegation examined Indian grains, toured fields, grain warehouses and export warehouses in the Punjab, Madhya Pradesh, and Mumbai regions. Egyptian officials discussed cooperation in facilitating Egyptian agricultural projects in India with the Indian Ministry of Agriculture.
The Russia-Ukraine war disrupted global wheat exports from the two Eastern European countries and caused a remarkable global grain price inflation. Russia and Ukraine together account for nearly 30% of the world’s wheat exports.
Egypt, the world’s largest wheat importer, relies on wheat to produce bread. 80% of the country’s wheat imports around, 12 to 13 million tonnes, are supplied by Russia and Ukraine.
