Discussions on climate change repercussions affecting Africa were reviewed by Egyptian Minister of International Cooperation Rania al-Mashat and Vera Songwe United Nations Under-Secretary-General and Executive Secretary of UNECA at a meeting on Tuesday.

The two sides reviewed the mechanism required to put African countries in control to address climate change where states can unify their objectives through regional developments. The meeting is part of Vera Songwe’s official mission to Cairo to participate in COP27 preperations with government officials and other stakeholders.

Mashat and Songwe assessed the prospects of strengthening the ‘South-South’ and triangular cooperation to diversify a range of modalities for the exchange of development solutions.

“The Ministry’s vision for South-South and triangular cooperation will also be realised through the South-South Development Academy in Egypt. It will capitalise on the Egyptian role in the exchange of expertise and the sharing of success stories with developing and helping emerging economies, and identify development priorities”, al-Mashat explained.

In line with COP26 and the road to Net Zero emission by 2050, Songwe delivered a keynote speech at the first Egyptian International Cooperation Forum (ICF). She stressed the need for a framework for Africa to realise just transition modalities to achieve a green and resilient economy.
