The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Special Envoy and renown American actress Angelina Jolie landed in the Yemeni city of Aden on Sunday.

The visit aims to highlight the humanitarian consequences of the conflict in Yemen which has been ongoing since 2015. According to the UNHCR, Jolie “will be visiting Yemeni families, including displaced families and refuges, to hear directly from them how the conflict has ripped their lives apart”.

The Special Envoy has been engaged in numerous campaigns and visits to highlight humanitarian catastrophes around the world. Her work touched the lives of refugees in over 50 countries including Afghanistan, Iraq, Kenya, Lebanon, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Ukraine to name a few.

“UNHCR hopes her visit will highlight the increasing humanitarian needs in Yemen and help mobilise urgent support for badly needed work ahead of the annual High-Level Pledging Conference for Yemen on 16 March and call for regional and international actors to commit an end to the conflict”, the UN agency said in a statement.

Yemen has been engulfed in war since a coup by the Houthis on the internationally recognised government in 2015. A Saudi led Arab coalition was formed to reclaim the capital Sanaa from the Houthis. The conflict expanded on multiple war fronts and displaced over two million Yemenis.

The United Nations had described the situation in Yemen as “the worst humanitarian crisis”, especially after a huge reduction in aid pledges by global donors in recent years.
