The German Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung, in cooperation with the United Nations Human Settlements Program ‘Habitat’, revealed ‘Cairo Bike’, a bicycle sharing project launched in Cairo on Tuesday.
The initiative’s purpose is to reduce reliance on motor transport, air pollution, carbon emissions and improve traffic. In 2016, studies were carried out jointly between the Cairo Governorate, the United Nations Human Settlements Program (Habitat) and the Swiss Dorosos Foundation.
A trial scheme of the ‘Cairo Bike’ will be launched within two months and followed by the project’s first operational phase in the Downtown, Garden City and Zamalek areas. A total of 500 bicycles will be available for hire from 45 hire stations scattered around Cairo.
Users can subscribe to different packages on the bike sharing application. The project offers hiring flexibility, in which bicycles can be hired and dropped at different Cairo Bike stations.
The Cairo Governorate contracted an Egyptian-Danish consortium to purchase, maintain and operate the bicycles in the first phase of the project.
