The 53rd Cairo International Book Fair opens to public on Thursday

Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly accompanied by Minister of Culture Enas Abdel-Dayem inaugurated the 53rd Cairo International Book Fair (CIBF) on Wednesday.

This year’s fair is held at Egypt International Exhibition Center (EIEC) in the Fifth Settlement area, East Cairo. The fair opened its gates to the public on Thursday 27 January, and is scheduled to run until 7 February 2022.

The fair is held under the theme “Egypt’s identity, culture and the question of future”. Greece will be the guest of honour, and the writer, Yahya Haqqi, is a feature of the fair, and the writer, Abdel-Tawab Youssef, is the character of the children book fair.

“This years fair will witness the launch of ‘the digital book project’ at the General Egyptian Book Organization (GEBO) pavilion. The book is titled  ‘The Encyclopaedia of Ancient Egypt’, which was written by the late famous archaeologist Selim Hassan”, Minister of Culture, Enas Abdel-Dayem, said.

1,063 Egyptian, Arab and foreign publishers participate at the fair which features displays of artificial intelligence portraying the character of the writer Yahya Haqqi in an interactive hologram display. Children can enjoy the stories of the late writer Abdel-Tawab Youssef virtually using 3D glasses.

On Thursday, Al-Azhar announced featuring a one-of-a-kind Quran printed in Braille language. The holy book can be found in the Al-Azhar’s pavilion.

“An award for the best Arab publisher was created, along with increasing the value of prizes to from £E10,000 to £E40,000 for each cultural field, which was facilitated by the National Bank of Egypt”, Abdel-Dayem noted.

The 53rd CIBF returned to its accustomed annual date at the end of January following the delay of last year’s fair exceptionally to June 2021 due to the pandemic.
