Internet services were largely restored in Yemen on Tuesday after a four-day outage following Saudi-led coalition air strikes which damaged telecom infrastructure.
“To all friends and loved ones: We missed you”, the Houthis’ deputy Foreign Minister, Hussein al-Ezzi, said on Twitter, praising efforts to repair the damage.
Internet blockage observatory NetBlocks said; “at 22:00 GMT on Monday internet services were beginning to be restored”.
Seven years of conflict have divided Yemen between an internationally recognised government based in the Southern city of Aden and the Houthi group which largely controls the North from Sanaa.
The Saudi-led coalition said its “strikes on Friday were targeting Houthi military strongholds in the Red Sea city of Hodeidah” which is the main landing point for Yemen’s undersea web connections.
The outage hindered remittance money transfers by Yemeni expatriates. Saba news agency reported a statement by the Houthis Communications Ministry calling on the United Nations to “send equipment to ensure the return of services to their full capacity”.
