“36 ancient Egyptian antiquity pieces had been smuggled to Madrid in 2014 were recovered from the Spanish authorities,”, The Egyptian Public Prosecution announced on Monday.
The Egyptian ambassador to Spain Youssef Mekkawi was accompanied by a delegation from the Egyptian Public Prosecution office visited the National Heritage Museum in Madrid. The delegation met the director of the museum and Spanish officials, where they initiated the recovery procedures.
The delegation inspected the seized antiquities and matched them with pictures sent to Cairo by the Spanish authorities. The pictures were examined by the Recovered Antiquities Department at the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities.
“The delegation will supervise the procedures for packaging and shipping the recovered antiquities to Cairo, in preparation for their delivery to officials of the Egyptian Ministry of Antiquities”, the Public Prosecution office said in a statement.
