At the ‘Differently Abled’ ceremony, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi revealed “Damej” (integration), a tool providing access to websites for those with visual and/or hearing impairments, on Sunday.

The application was designed in cooperation with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) in Egypt.

“People with hearing disabilities usually use the sign language, so we allowed ‘Damej’ to convert words and sentences displayed on the screen into sign letters, so that they can be read in sign language”, said Hazem Salem, the founder of the application.

“Users can understand the content on the website. ‘Damej’ facilitates and speeds up the browsing of users with hearing impairments, as it eliminates the traditional method of converting every topic on the site into a video in sign language, which is time and effort consuming”, Salem added.

The tool’s features include resizing fonts, clearly display links/URLs in websites, decreasing the screen brightness for those who are sensitive to high light, improve readability via text spacing and many other features which are currently under development.

‘Damej’ offers the ability to read an entire website in both Arabic and English languages for users with special visual needs.
