Amid concerns over the spread of the new COVID-19 variant ‘Omicron’, which was first reported in South Africa, the Canadian government announced Tuesday an entry ban on travellers from Nigeria, Malawi and Egypt.

“These countries have been added as an update to the list which includes South Africa, Mozambique, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Lesotho, Eswatini and Namibia”, the Toronto Star reported.

Canada expanded the travel ban to the Netherlands, which reported its first infections of the ‘Omicron’ variant. An unnamed source said, “the Cabinet approved the new steps at a meeting held on Tuesday morning”.

“At the meeting, other options were considered, including imposing a COVID-19 test on all travellers arriving at Canadian airports”, the source explained.

Following a cabinet meeting, Health Minister Jean-Yves Duclos said “any new decision would be announced at a later time”. Public Safety Minister, Marco Mendicino, declined to comment on border measures.
