As the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) forces advance towards the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed transferred his powers to his deputy and headed to the war front on Wednesday.
Ethiopians live in a state of confusion and fear amid speculations that the regime is falling. Several warnings were made by the United Nations and Western countries to evacuate their nationals from Ethiopia. Local reports say, “TPLF forces are only 130 kilometres away from the capital, which prompted Ahmed to join the battlefront”.
“Foreign Affairs Minister Demeke Mekonnen, Ahmed’s deputy, will take over the running of the government day-to-day business in the absence of the Prime Minister”, the Ethiopian Broadcasting Corporation Fana quoted government spokesperson, Legisi Tulu.
The US, the UK, Germany and France urged their nationals to leave Ethiopia immediately as the UN has almost completely evacuated its staff.
Armed confrontations are still going on in the regions of Amhara and Afar, where the Ethiopian army and the local forces of the two regions are defending against the TPLF advance.
On Tuesday, CNN reported that the US army deployed forces in Djibouti to aid in the evacuation of their embassy in Ethiopia. The US embassy in Addis Ababa warned about a possible terrorist attack in the capital and other parts of the country, targeting diplomatic buildings, tourist spots, markets, foreign companies, resorts, government facilities and other places.
