Egypt and the UN launch joint resource platform for migrants and refugees

“Egyptian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sameh Shoukry, and United Nation’s Resident Coordinator, Elena Panova, launched a joint platform providing resources to migrants and refugees in Egypt”, the Egyptian Foreign Ministry said in a statement late on Thursday.

“Egypt provided generously basic services like health and education to most migrants, refugees and refuge seekers and takes additional measures to help those groups to face COVID-19 pandemic”, Panova said at the launch ceremony.

Shoukry stressed; “for decades, Egypt has hosted those who needed protection and has adopted an approach based on respect for the human rights of migrants and refugees. It integrates them into Egyptian society and eliminate all forms of discrimination. The approach ensures everyone benefits from social and economic development in the country”.

The platform was initiatied by the Egyptian government and UN in Egypt to support cooperation between the government, UN, development partners and donors to boost coordination and provide sustainable development resources to migrants and refugees. According to the UNCHR’s latest figures, Egypt hosts more than 265,000 registered asylum-seekers and refugees from 65 countries.
