Sisi establish cooperation with Johnson and agree British support for Egyptian development plans

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson agreed with Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi to expand the United Kingdom’s engagement in Egyptian development plans. The announcement was made at meeting of al-Sisi and Johnson during the United Nation’s Conference on Climate Change (COP26), in Glasgow on Monday.

“At the meeting, Johnson described Cairo as one of the main partners of the UK in the Middle East, affirming British support to the ambitious development projects being carried out in Egypt”, said Egypt’s Presidential spokesman Bassam Rady.

Al-Sisi and Johnson agreed on “strengthening bilateral cooperation in various fields, especially the areas of investments, security, intelligence, military, education, health and tourism”.They also discussed “efforts to contain climate change”. Egypt seeks continuous cooperation with the UK to support adaptation efforts against the effects of climate change.

Sisi affirmed, “Egypt’s aspiration to host the 27th gathering of the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP27) in November 2022 in the Red Sea resort city of Sharm El-Sheikh”.

In his speech at the COP26, Monday, President al-Sisi called on developed countries to “fulfil their pledge to provide $100 Billion to developing countries to face global warming”. He also highlighted Egypt’s latest steps in promoting sustainable green development, which include plans to increase clean energy sources in Egypt from the current 20% to 42% by 2035.

Egyptian President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi arrived in the UK at the head of a delegation including Minister of Environment, Yassmine Fouad, to attend the UN Climate Change Conference (COP26) summit on Sunday in Glasgow (between 31 October and 12 November).

Meetings of heads of state at the conference are taking place on Sunday and Monday. Presidential spokesman, Bassam Rady, noted; “the president has focused on climate change in developing countries and Africa. He held several bilateral meetings with world leaders including UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson”.

“The COP26 climate conference is an important step to finalise an action plan to achieve the desired goals of the 2015 Paris Climate Agreement”, said Minister of Environment Yassmine Fouad in a statement on Sunday.

“An Egyptian exhibition is in display at the conference venue, presenting success stories of climate change defiant National projects in the sectors of renewable energy, sustainable transport, agriculture and irrigation”, she added.

Earlier in October, US Climate Envoy, John Kerry, revealed that Egypt has been nominated to host the next gathering of the UN Climate Change Conference (COP 27) in 2022.
