US sends Egypt 1.6M Pfizer doses via COVAX

“Egypt received 1.6 million doses of Pfizer BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine a donation from the United States through the COVAX initiative”, the Egyptian Ministry of Health announced on Thursday.

The Ministry noted the shipment is part of five shipments of the Pfizer vaccine totalling five million doses from the United States. “Egypt is on the shortlist of partner countries to receive vaccines against the coronavirus”, according to the US Embassy.

“The shipment will undergo tests and analysis by the Egyptian Drug Authority (EDA) labs, before being distributed to the 1,100 vaccination centres across the country”, the Ministry added.

Last week, Egyptian Minister of Health, Hala Zayed, announced preparations for handling and distributing the Pfizer vaccine doses in a number of governorates. “The government has secured a Nationwide storage capacity of 4.3 million doses in 600 recently purchased refrigerators”, she noted.

“Egypt has administered a total of 16,223,309 vaccine doses Nationwide”, according to a report by the World Health Organisation.

Data released by the Ministry revealed 741 new COVID-19 cases were recorded on Thursday, which increases the total infection tally officially to 304,524 Nationwide. Egyptian death toll from the virus has reached 17,331, while the total recoveries stand at 256,886.
