Egypt’s Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities began a restoration project of the granite column of Saraya al-Qubba garden.
The garden is located opposite to the Saraya al-Qubba presidential palace in Cairo. The project is part of a scheme to decorate public space and gardens and restore them to their original elegance.
“The project aims to restore, assemble, and lift the authentic column up”, said Mustafa al-Waziri, secretary-general of the Supreme Council of Antiquities.
The council’s restorers began cleaning dirt and calcifications accumulated on the column over time due to erosion. The column will finally be placed at the centre of the garden to display its historical, archaeological and aesthetic values.
The column was carved from pink granite during the New Kingdom in the shape of a cylinder with a crown of palm leaves which fold outwards. It is approximately eight metres high and the crown stands at about 82 centimetres.
