An advisor to the Grand Mufti of Egypt said that virtual wedding ceremonies and signing marriage contracts using video conference technology will be allowed in the country.
“Men and women can make their marriage contract via video conference technology”, Magdy Ashour, the advisor to the Grand Mufti Shawqi Allam, told TEN T.V. on Thursday.
“Online marriages should be performed with certain controls, the most prominent of which is that the groom, bride, and witnesses must be present online, and the Ma’zun (an officiant who is tasked to conclude the marriage contract) should check the couple’s IDs. Conducting online marriage contracts shall be used in quite limited cases”, Ashour noted.
A report released by the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS) on Tuesday, revealed that “Egypt records a case of divorce every two minutes and two marriages per minute”.
“The number of marriage contracts in 2020 reached 876,000, while divorce cases of the same year reached 213,000”, said head of CAPMAS, Major General Khairat Barakat.
In February 2021, amendments were made to Egypt’s Personal Status draft law imposing punishment on husbands who hide their marriage(s) and do not inform his current/future wife(s) about them.
The amendments stipulate that an already married man should mention his marital status in a new second marriage certificate, writing the name(s) of his other wife(s) and her (their) place of residence. He must also inform his current wife/wives of new marriage(s) by a registered letter.
