Egyptian Prosecutor-General Hamda al-Sawy retrieved 114 Egyptian artefacts at the Egyptian embassy in Paris on Wednesday. The recovered artefacts were illegally smuggled into France.
“The Egyptian prosecution’s investigations, in cooperation with the French judicial authorities, succeeded in stopping all attempts to put the artefacts up for auction”, a statement by the office of the prosecutor general in Cairo, said.
The secretary-general of the Supreme Council of antiquities Mostafa al-Waziry accompanied the prosecution’s delegation, led by al-Sawy, to inspect the retrieved artefacts.
Al-Sawy expressed his appreciation for the cooperation between the Egyptian and French judicial authorities, adding, “it is necessary to continue cooperation in the field of counter-antiquities theft”.
Egyptian Ambassador to France Alaa Youssef highlighted the strength of the Egyptian French relations in recent years. Youssef stressed “the importance of the constructive cooperation and continuous coordination between the judicial authorities in the two countries in the past two years, which played a major role in the recovery of the artefacts”.
