A delegation of Russian prosecutors met with their Egyptian counterparts in Cairo, on Tuesday, to exchange data on the Russian passenger plane crash in Sinai in 2015.

“Prosecutor General Hamada al-Sawy stressed, during talks with the Russian prosecution team, the importance of continued judicial cooperation and exchange of data related to the investigations”, a statement by the Egyptian Prosecutor General’s office read.

The Tuesday’s meeting took place nearly a month after Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and Russian President Vladimir Putin agreed to resume direct flights between Russia and the Red Sea airports.

Airports in the Red Sea region include Hurghada and Sharm El-Sheikh, which are hotspots of Egypt’s tourism industry.

Russia had suspended direct flights to Hurghada and Sharm El-Sheikh, as well as other Egyptian airports, following the crash, which killed all 224 passengers and crewmembers on board.

Egypt has repeatedly dismissed preliminary reports indicating that the plane was downed by a bomb which gained credence in Russia.

Russia’s flight suspension to Red Sea resorts has taken a heavy toll on Egypt’s tourism industry as Russian visitors are seen as major contributors to the tourism market in Egypt.

Egyptian authorities have upgraded all safety and security measures at all airports Since 2015.
