The Eritrean authorities released 97 Egyptian fishermen on Sunday. The fishermen were detained after entering the Eritrean territorial waters on 12 January.

Egyptian Lawyer Sami al-Ghaben confirmed that the “97 fishermen were on three fishing vessels”.

The released fishermen include 29 from the city of al-Matareya in Daqahliya governorate. The rest were from Ezbet al-Burj in Damietta governorate.

They were held for 100 days until formal negotiations secured their release.

“The fishermen’s families set up a committee to defend the detained fishermen. The committee lobbied for intervention on their behalf”, Ghaben noted.
