Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi and British Prime Minister Boris Johnson exchanged views on developments related to the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), and regional issues of mutual concern in a phone call on Thursday evening.

Al-Sisi stressed the paramount importance of the GERD issue describing it as a matter of National security. He reaffirmed Cairo’s adherence to its water rights and reaching a legally binding agreement, which includes clear rules for the filling and operation of the dam.

“Egypt aspires to enhance mutual cooperation with the UK in various fields, particularly technology transfer and localization, as well as close political consultation and coordination on regional and international issues of mutual interest”, al-Sisi told Johnson.

“PM Johnson expressed his keenness to keep in touch with the Egyptian president to enhance consultation and coordination on various regional and international issues”, presidential spokesman Bassam Rady said in a statement.

Johnson voiced appreciation for the “pivotal role” Egypt plays, towards settling the Libyan civil strife, in addition to its efforts to help the political process to restore state institutions in Libya.

Last month, Egypt welcomed the outcome of the UN-sponsored vote, which led to the selection of a Libyan interim government. Libyan National elections are currently scheduled to take place on 24 December 2021.

Egypt has been pushing for a political settlement in Libya for years, calling for a ceasefire, a complete disarming of militias, an end to foreign intervention in the country and a fair distribution of wealth between the country’s three regions.

“Both leaders also discussed means to boost cooperation between their two countries in the economic, investment and security sectors as well as in health, education and energy”, Rady added.
