Coinciding with the International day of People with Disabilities, Egypt revealed that 1.1 million people with disabilities in Egypt, benefit from support worth E£5 Billion annually.
In coordination with private sector companies and factories, 3,235 people with disabilities have been employed, and coordination is ongoing to secure training and rehabilitation opportunities for 7,000 others
“There are 3.6 million families, or 14.7 million individuals that benefit from the ‘Karama and Takaful’ cash support, up from 63,000 beneficiaries in 2014”, according to earlier statistics provided by the Ministry of Social Solidarity.
This includes securing loans for 3,000 women under the ‘Mastoura’ National project, which micro-finances Egyptian women Nationwide, in cooperation with Nasser Social Bank.
The report highlights National efforts to encourage young people with disabilities to benefit from small projects promoted by the ‘productive families’ initiative and projects for women provided by the ministry.
“People with disabilities are supported and will be represented in committees dealing with their issues. Their involvement is sought in the rehabilitation activities along with employment”, the report added.
Efforts, in this respect, include integrating 368 people with hearing-impairment into the faculties of specific education in nine Egyptian universities.
The ministry has provided grants to both male and female students with visual impairment in government universities, at a cost of E£900,000.
The report said, “psychological and rehabilitation services were provided to 1,789 people, and services to develop language expression skills for 245 children with disabilities”.
In November, Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi urged “consolidating the state’s efforts to produce advanced prosthetics in Egypt, based on the latest technology, with the assistance of foreign expertise”.
