England toughen post-lockdown regional tiers

British Prime minister Boris Johnson speaking to the House of Commons remotely on 23 November 2020

London – Times of Egypt

British Prime minister Boris Johnson announced strengthening the regional three-tier system, which is due to return after the current lockdown ends on December 2nd. The PM made the announcement to members of the House of Commons via video-link on Monday.

“The breakthroughs in treatment and testing vaccines mean that the scientific cavalry is now in sight. We know in our hearts that next year we will succeed. By the spring these advances should reduce the need for the restrictions which we endured in 2020 and would make the whole concept of a COVID lockdown redundant”, Johnson told the House of Commons.

Following the current lockdown measures, non-essential shops, hairdressers, gyms, weddings and collective worshiping will be allowed to reopen.

“From next Wednesday people would be able to leave their home for any purpose and meet others in outdoor public spaces subject to the rule of six”, the PM said.

On Thursday, the cabinet will reveal the list of Nationwide regions and in which tiers they are placed. The infection rate, R number, will determine the allocation of tiers, which will be reviewed every two weeks and would last until the spring.

“In tier one people should work from home wherever possible, in tier two alcohol may only be served in hospitality settings as part of a substantial meal, in tier three indoor entertainment, hotels and other accommodation will have to close, along with all forms of hospitality except for delivery and takeaways”, Mr. Johnson added.

He expressed his apologies for the “unavoidable hardship” that businesses are facing due to the tough restrictions.
