Egypt’s House of Representatives approved a bill on regulating clinical medical research, known as ‘clinical trials’ on Monday, by a two-thirds majority.
Other bills on the agenda, including customs, the setting up of fund for people with disabilities, charity bodies for churches and toughening up punishment for electricity theft were approved.
The customs bill includes protection of intellectual property rights, submitted by the Customs authority in cooperation with the Trade and Industry Ministry.
The bill for church charity organisations was proposed by the government, to promote equality among the Egyptian Christian groups.
According to the bill, “each of the Catholic and Evangelical churches will be allowed to have its own charities authority as a legal authority headquartered in Cairo”.
The prime minister, as stated in the bill, will determine the two authorities’ powers, duties, responsibilities and scope of work following Cabinet approval.
The charities authority board of each church will chaired by the head of church and consist of 12 members; equally representing clergymen and dignified figures from each community.
