“32 Egyptian fishermen, had been detained by Houthi rebels in Yemen, were returned home, after nearly two months in detention for having breached Yemeni waters”, Expatriate Affairs Minister Nabila Makram announced.

State television in Cairo showed footage of special flight carrying the fishermen arriving at Cairo airport on Tuesday evening. Makram received the fishermen at the airport.

The fishermen were detained by Houthi rebels in December as they attempted to fish in Red Sea restricted Yemeni zones.

“I have proudly followed efforts to end the detention of 32 fishermen in Yemen. Such efforts have led to saving their lives and securing their safe return to Egypt”, said Egyptian president Abdel Fattah al-Sisi.

Egyptian fishermen have been arrested in the territorial waters of neighbouring countries like Sudan, Libya and Tunisia on several recent occasions.

Egypt’s foreign ministry has repeatedly intervened in these cases to ensure the release of fishermen. They are advised against trespassing in foreign waters.
