Conservatives win majority at UK general elections

The British conservative party has a won landslide general election, by securing 365 seats of out 650 seats in the House o0f Commons. The 80 seats majority is considered the largest number of seats the party won since 1987.

“I say thank you for the trust you have placed in us and in me. We will work round the clock to repay your trust and to deliver on your priorities; with a parliament that works for you,” said British prime minister Boris Johnson, standing outside 10 Downing street, London. 

Johnson added that he “will fulfil his pledge to leave the European Union on 31 January 2020”.

Labour party leader Jeremy Corbyn, said he “will not fight another election as Labour leader, and that (he) will stand down early next year, when the party choses a successor”. 

Election Results: 

Conservative party: 365 seats.

Labour party: 203 seats.

Scottish National party: 48 seats.

Liberal Democrats party: 11 seats.

Democratic Unionist party: 8 seats. 

Sinn Féin party: 7 seats.

Plaid Cymru: 4 seats.

Social Democratic and Labour party: 2 seats.

The Green party: 1 seat.

The Alliance Party of Northern Ireland: 1 seat. 

The European Union and British prime minister Boris Johnson have agreed an exit deal from the EU for the United Kingdom. However, it still awaits the approval of the British parliament. 

If parliament approves the deal with the European Union, then trade talks will begin within weeks of supposed scheduled Brexit day on 31 January.

At 10pm on Thursday, 12 December polling stations closed their doors. The counting process of the votes casted earnestly started in every constituency and lasted until the early hours of the morning.
