Egypt’s Damietta governorate won the UNESCO ‘Learning Cities Award 2021’ for its women empowerment project. The announcement was made on Wednesday at the 5th International Conference on Learning Cities held in Yeonsu, Republic of Korea.

“Egypt submitted a project on women’s empowerment under the coronavirus pandemic, among ten countries which submitted projects,” Damietta Governor, Manal Awad, told ‘Ala Masouleyety’ (On My Responsibility) TV program on Wednesday.

“The project enhanced the role of women and focused on their empowerment in various fields. Arbitrators at the UNESCO studied the project for a year before sending a committee to follow up on it”, Awad noted.

This year’s Learning Cities include ten cities including Damietta (Egypt), Al-Wakra (Qatar), Belfast (United Kingdom), Clermonth-Ferrand (France), Dublin (Ireland), Huejotzingo (Mexico), Jubail Industrial City (Saudi Arabia), Osan (Republic of Korea), Shanghai (China) and Wyndham (Australia).

The cities were selected by the UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning (UIL), upon the recommendation of an independent jury of international experts.
