Arab League (AL) Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul-Gheit expressed his “great disappointment” over the Lebanese Prime Minister-designate Saad Hariri’s decision to step down on Thursday.

“The consequences of Hariri’s stepping down may be dangerous for the situation in Lebanon”, Aboul-Gheit said in a statement.

He made the remarks from New York, where he is participating in a UN Security Council session on Libya.

He said, “all Lebanese politicians are responsible for such a deteriorating condition”, adding, “the AL will continue its support for Lebanon in this crucial stage of its history”.

Hariri gave up the effort to form a new government, on Thursday, after a meeting with President Michel Aoun. “It’s clear that nothing changes. It seems that we disagree with the president”, Hariri stressed.

Hariri’s failure to form a non-partisan cabinet in the crisis-torn country narrows the chances to save the country from the worsening financial conditions.

Aboul-Gheit urged the international community to stand by Lebanon and support its people in this critical phase.
