Middle East peace cannot be achieved without a Palestinian state: Arab League chief

Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Abul Gheit said on Wednesday, that true peace in the Middle East would remain a “distant dream” without the a sovereign, contiguous and viable Palestinian state on the borders of June 4, 1967, with East Jerusalem as its capital.

Receiving United Nations Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process Nickolay Mladenov in Cairo, the AL chief asserted the Arab view that “regional stability is directly related to reaching a political settlement based on the two-state solution, which remains the only internationally acceptable solution that enjoys Arab consensus”.

“Establishing sustainable peace in the Middle East requires the resumption of negotiations based on well-known references, and under the decisions of international legitimacy”, he added.

The meeting tackled the latest developments in the Palestinian situation, at all political, security and economic levels.

Abul Gheit stressed “the importance of building a Palestinian consensuses to end the division in a way that enhances the solidity of the Palestinian position in the face of the current challenges”.
