Cairo – Times of Egypt
Former Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak has died on Tuesday in a Cairo military hospital, at the age of 91. He had undergone a surgery last month, where he experienced some post-surgical medical complications and was admitted into intensive care unit (ICU).
Mubarak, a former air force officer, became president in 1981. He clung to power for 30-year until 2011, when he was ousted during the Arab Spring uprising. He was jailed for six years while awaiting trial on several charges. In 2016 he was convicted of corruption charges with his sons Alaa and Gamal.
In 2017 he was acquitted from some of the charges against him, including the charge of conspiring to kill protestors. He was released after serving six years in detention.
Critics describe his presidency as a ‘period of corruption and prosperity’. Many saw him a tolerant president, as he allowed some freedom of speech to a certain extent.
